Passion and Purpose: Scott Van Osdol

Artist Speaker Series

When artists create work about things that they care about, they make better art. This series aims to explore all the ways that “passion projects” emerge, evolve, develop, are supported, funded and deployed.

Why do you make the work that you make, and how does it affect change? These are the key questions we pose to participants, who will share their stories in images, words and interactive sessions.

Using Your Superhuman Creative Powers for Good

Scott Van Osdol

Austin photographer Scott Van Osdol shoots what he loves—documentary style, commercially. He keeps it simple, clear, and compelling. He subscribes to the notion, “Give it away, it comes back”, shooting pro-bono for projects like Art From the Streets and the Big Bend Rodeo. For 10 years he led the Hill Country Ride for AIDS marketing team, working with Austin’s best creatives to raise more than $10 million with campaigns that appeared multiple times in ComArts, PRINT, and HOW International Design Annual. His work has won more prizes than a case o’ Cracker Jacks: Archive Magazine’s 200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide 2020, Communication Arts Photo Annual 2019, Graphis Photo, PRINT, HOW, International Photography Awards, PR Week Campaign of the Year, and dozens of Austin and regional ADDYs. He’s had the pleasure of working with Chicago agencies The Monogram Group and CDK Global. You can see the work at
